Creative Writing Workshops with Dominic Hoey
Going West is excited to welcome Dominic Hoey—bestselling author, poet, and experienced writing teacher—to Shadbolt House for a new series of weekly creative writing workshops.
Tuesdays, 6:30–8:00pm

These Tuesday evening sessions are open to writers of all levels. The only prerequisite is a passion for taking your creative writing to the next level.

Each week, participants will work on craft and writing prompts in a relaxed and supportive environment, looking at prose and poetry techniques to give you a solid base to build your writing practice on.
Meet your tutor:
Dominic Hoey is an award-winning poet, author and playwright based in West Auckland.
His debut novel, Iceland, was a New Zealand bestseller and long-listed for the 2018 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards. His short story 1986 won the 2021 Sunday Star-Times Short Story Award. He has also published a poetry collection, I Thought We’d Be Famous (2019), the novel Poor People with Money (2022), and his latest novel, 1985 (2025), is receiving rave reviews.
Dominic has over a decade of teaching experience working with everyone from beginners to published authors. Currently, he lives with a small, vicious dog and dreams of one day owning an animal rescue farm.
